MainStage Consulting
MainStage is a live performance program that runs an Apple computers. It’s designed for keyboardists, guitarists, bassists and vocalists to create a customizable hub for sounds, effects, charts and notes that can be used during a live performance. Initially designed by Emagic who also produced Logic Pro – a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) for recording – MainStage allowed digital creaters to take their sounds with them from the studio to the stage using a very similar interface. Apple computer purchased Logic and MainStage in 2002 and continues update both programs with new features and stability enhancements.
For keyboardists, MainStage becomes a performance hub allowing them to use stock and 3rd party VI’s (Virtual Instruments) to create a sonic pallet only available in the most expensive of keyboard workstations. Like those workstations, you can create any number of splits and layers, combine various types of instruments (samplers, synthesizers, keyboard emulations), include drum machines and arpeggiating elements, even playback audio files. UNLIKE those work stations, you can continually update your options with 3rd party products from various programmers so your workstation always stays current.
For the guitarist or bassist, MainStage contains a series of amplifier, speaker and pedal emulations so your guitar rig can travel with you on your laptop. 3rd party products are also available to expand your available sounds, and MIDI Pedalboards can be connected so you can have all of your sounds at the stomp of a button.
For vocalists, MainStage not only provides studio quality vocal shaping tools, but can provide your own personal teleprompter at your feet allowing you to move between songs or parts of songs with the tap of a MIDI footswitch. Bobby Kimble (vocalist for Toto) used MainStage live for many years just for that.
As with any product that contains a vast array of options and “ways to do things”, learning and mastering such a product can take months or years.
